Adrian Dater's Picks
Blackhawks over Avalanche
There are a few reasons why I like the Blackhawks to pull off an opening-night upset in Denver, despite the steep odds in favor of the Avs. First off, no Nathan MacKinnon for the Avs. Second, Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will make his return after missing all of last season because of an immunity disorder. Third, Marc-Andre Fleury will be in net for Chicago, and he’s had great success against the Avs in the past. Colorado still has the better team, but I think the loss of MacKinnon gives the Blackhawks a real opportunity here.
Capitals over Rangers
Alexander Ovechkin may not play in this game because of injury. Then again, he might. Either way, I like the Caps to prevail at home against the New York Rangers. There was a lot of anticipation about this game, when the Rangers acquired tough guy Ryan Reaves vis a vis a matchup against Caps agitator Tom Wilson. But Reaves is currently sidelined with a lower-body injury. Washington should have enough, with or without Ovechkin to beat the Rangers.
Canadiens Puck Line (+1.5) over Maple Leafs
Montreal will be without starting goalie Carey Price for an undetermined amount of time, as he enrolled in the NHL’s player assistance program. That is tough news for a team that was carried to the Stanley Cup Finals last spring by the veteran netminder. But the Canadiens are still a good team, and the absence of Auston Matthews won’t help the Leafs any. I like road teams in home openers, because they have fewer distractions.
Golden Knights over Kraken - Puckline
I think starting its first season on the road will ultimately prove to be a bummer for the Kraken. If it opened at home, I’d feel better about taking them. But I think they lose by at least a couple goals to the talented Golden Knights.
Golden Knights-Kraken Over 5.5
While there will be two quality goaltenders facing each other in this game - Philipp Grubauer for the Kraken against Robin Lehner - I think the excitement of opening night will create a high-scoring game. Or, at least six combined goals. I like the value price on the Over here of 5.5 goals.
Lightning over Penguins
Let’s keep things a bit conservative with our first bet here. I want to see the Lightning a bit more before I get too frothy at the mouth and start making puck line bets on them. A home opener, with a second straight Stanley Cup banner raised to the ceiling of Amalie Arena, should make for a feel-good atmosphere for the Bolts.
