The World Cup starts on Thursday 14 June and it’s an uninspiring opening match between hosts Russia and a Saudi Arabia side who are expected to be the whipping boys of Group A.

Stanislav Cherchesov is the man tasked with making this a successful World Cup for the Russians, although the omens aren’t particularly good considering that the hosts were beaten heavily by Brazil and France in March.

Perhaps more encouragement can be gleaned from a 3-3 draw against Spain in November although this is a team who are clearly porous from a defensive point-of-view and it’s questionable as to why they have chosen to meet so many high quality teams in the build-up to the World Cup.

While there are defensive issues, there is more optimism going forward thanks to the presence of Aleksandr Golovin and Aleksei Miranchuk in midfield, while Artem Dzyuba and Fyodor Smolov will compete for the lone attacking role.

Saudi Arabia won’t be too fearful of the challenge and will look to raise their game against the hosts, having recently lost 2-1 in a friendly against Italy.

Previously to this, there were victories over Algeria and Greece and this is a team who will aim to be attack-minded and they might also play freely in their role as underdogs.

At the very least, we can get with the Saudi Arabians on the Asian Handicap and also plump for both teams to score in this match.
