World Cup qualification Group D looks a tricky one to call. In addition to Wales and Austria, you have Republic of Ireland and Serbia who will also be eyeing top spot and automatic qualification for Russia in 2018.

The bookies actually have Wales as slight favourites to finish top of the pile and they’re an attractive 5/2 to claim victory in this clash, with Chris Coleman retaining the same group of players that achieved such great things at Euro 2016.

The big omission is Aaron Ramsey and the injured Arsenal star played a pretty key role in proceedings last summer, even if Gareth Bale remains the talismanic figure within the squad and the Real Madrid star is raring to go.

Bale played a starring role during Euro 2016 qualification and Austria will be mightily wary of his threat, whether that’s from open play or set pieces.

Joe Allen has been the stand-out player for Stoke City this season and the midfielder will be a key presence in midfield, with Ashley Williams once again marshalling a defence that generally kept things watertight during the last qualifying campaign.

Austria qualified for Euro 2016 in style, although Marcel Koller’s side were badly disappointing in France and went out at the group stage, showing few signs of the team who did so well to finish top in qualifying.

The majority of the squad play their football in Germany and that includes Bayern Munich star David Alaba, although there is a clear overreliance on veteran Marc Janko to score goals and Wales will be aware of that.

In short, the Welsh look capable of getting a point from this clash and the key plan will be avoiding defeat against arguably their fiercest group rival.
