It’s been a funny old season for both clubs. Barnsley looked like they were heading for a relegation scrap during the first few months of the season, although the Tykes have found their way to the top six and also won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley.

Meanwhile, Walsall have been in the top six all season although they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion from League One and they are on their third manager after the departures of Dean Smith and Sean O’Driscoll.

Jon Whitney is now in charge of the Saddlers and saw his team smash Port Vale 5-0 on Sunday, although that was a result reflected in the motivation levels of his side compared to a Valiants team who were playing in second gear.

Walsall have won five of their past seven matches and only Wigan have scored more on the road in League One this term, with Tom Bradshaw having notched twenty goals for the season and sure to be playing at a higher level next term.

Barnsley also had a great result last weekend when winning 4-1 at champions Wigan and they’ll be ready for a promotion charge after edging out Scunthorpe for that sixth place.

However, their home form hasn’t been that special all term and a recent 2-2 draw with Colchester illustrates that the Tykes are better on the road than on home soil.

Indeed, their home and away records are identical, while Walsall are even better on the road and should be backed on the handicap market at odds-against.
