Harry Redknapp didn’t last long at St Andrews after being persuaded to remain as Birmingham City manager following last season’s Great Escape.

Steve Cotterill has now been hired to salvage the latest mess and the 53-year-old is highly experienced when it comes to management, having been in charge of Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

He was pretty effective at Ashton Gate and led the Robins to the League One title although his track record at Championship level is mixed and the supporters are likely to give him a lukewarm reception on Friday night.

Birmingham were soundly battered a fortnight ago at Hull when losing 6-1 at Hull although they had previously collected four points from matches against Sheffield Wednesday and Derby.

Indeed, home form hasn’t been too shabby, with two wins, a draw and two defeats. There will be a noisy atmosphere at St Andrews for this one and the new manager is reporting a training ground full of confident spirits.

Cardiff sit proudly top of the Championship table after eleven games played and they have lost just once all season, although it should also be noted that they have won just two of their previous six matches.

It should also be noted that they were beaten 3-0 at Preston a few weeks ago and are likely to suffer a few more reverses away from home simply because of the competitive nature of the division.

On the premise that we think both teams should be 6/4 chances with the online bookmakers, we are inclined to have a small bet on Birmingham winning the match at tasty odds.

We also think it could be a night for the Blues to roll their sleeves up and a win to nil can also be taken for a small stake.
