An Italian side are back in the Champions League final for the first time in five years. Not since Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale won in 2010 has a side from Serie A reached this stage of the competition, although Juventus dumped Real Madrid out at the semi-final stage and now face the other Spanish giant in Berlin.

The Turin side have already had a memorable campaign, having cruised to a league title with the minimum of fuss, while a Coppa Italia victory over Lazio means that the double is already in the bag. But can Massimiliano Allegri’s produce a first-class performance in the Champions League final to make it a truly historic achievement?

The answer is probably not. Juventus have answered every question posed to them this season although the Old Lady made hard work of getting past Monaco at the quarter final stage of the Champions League before squeezing past Real Madrid to reach the final.

In comparison, Barcelona destroyed Bayern Munich in the first leg of their semi-final clash before playing out a relatively meaningless 3-2 defeat at the Allianz Arena which saw Luis Enrique’s team take their foot of the gas after scoring two away goals.

It has been relatively flawless for Barca throughout the season and the last meaningful defeat was at home to Malaga in February. Since then, the Catalan side have swept all before them, with that familiar triumvirate of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez more lethal than anything that’s happened before in club football.

Naturally, the whole side is brimming with quality and Sergio Busquets is back in the heart of the defence, while Javier Mascherano and Andres Iniesta keep the midfield ticking over and make this Barcelona team one of the potential greats in European history.

So it seems logical to back Barcelona to produce fireworks on the big stage, with the Juventus game plan likely to be one which attempts to nullify the triple threat posed by the Spanish champions. But how to nullify Messi in a withdrawn position? Few have succeeded in doing this and the acquisition of Suarez means that this magic Barcelona side has more than one trick up their sleeves.
