Bookmakers are going 7/1 the field for the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday (due off 1.50pm) and that tells you it’s going to be tough to solve.

But we all love a crack at these big handicaps and I might just have unearthed one at a price in the shape of the Willie Mullins trained MOZOLTOV. Apart from the fancied Champagne West, he’s the only runner not to have had a run this season – not been seen since April 2014 in fact – but that’s not been a problem for several of his stablemates of late, with the likes of Pont Alexandre, Arctic Fire, Vautour and Don Poli all winning on their first run back and the first-named after a similar absence.

The stable can certainly get one ready and the fact Mullins travels over form Ireland with him suggests he’s been showing plenty at home. He wasn’t far off top class over hurdles and he’s looked just as good, if not better, over fences on several occasions. His defeat of Don Cossack in a Grade 2 at Punchestown stands out and he wasn’t beaten far into third behind Trifolium and Felix Younger in the Grade 1 Arkle trial run at the Leopardstown January meeting. He’s at his best when the mud is flying and Friday’s “soft” could well deteriorate further should the forecast rain fall at the track, so he has to be worth an each-way punt at the current 20/1 with a certain Ruby Walsh booked.

Some firms already go as short as 14/1 and – call it a hunch – I wouldn’t be surprised if Pricewise puts him up in the morning.

I’ll be having a saver (at least) on Buywise who was an unlucky loser in the Paddy Power Gold Cup. Not for the first time he compromised his chance with some sloppy jumps and he almost slipped up at one point. That’s him all over, though, and he’s undoubtedly well handicapped enough to land a big one, goes well here and his stable is flying. Expect him to come late on the scene.

You can make a case for plenty of others but one I wouldn’t be interested in is Irish Cavalier, who is disputing favouritism currently, as his stable is struggling for winners right now. He could be a big drifter on the day.
