Settimo Milanese is a warm favourite for the class 3 handicap hurdle over 3m having finished a very good second (of 16) at Aintree ten days ago, when attempting to bring up his hat-trick after facile wins in minor events at Worcester and Southwell. His trainer Dr Richard Newland is turning him out again quickly before a 5lb rise takes effect and he’s very much the one they all have to beat.

That said, the forecast rain, if it materialises, could be a problem for him as all his best/recent form has been on good ground, and should the word ‘soft’ appear in the going description I’d want to be on Fergal O’Brien’s mare SOCKSY.

A dual winner over hurdles on soft/heavy, she took very well to fences last season, winning once on her reappearance at Ayr (soft) before running well in defeat on a couple of occasions, including when runner-up in a class 2 event at Haydock. We can safely ignore her final effort of last term as the ground had gone against her.

She’s surely got more races in her when he goes back over fences and when the mud is flying, but it’s no surprise to see her back over hurdles as she can run off a 5lb lower mark than her chase rating. That is something that won’t have been lost on her shrewd handler, who has already had a couple of winners this month, and that she has twice won after a break (269 and 228 days) suggests she might be one to catch fresh.
