Consecutive defeats against West Brom and Tottenham suggested it was going to be a tricky campaign for Crystal Palace. After all, they ended the previous season badly and Alan Pardew quickly became one of the favourites on the Premier League Sack Race market.

However, the arrival of Christian Benteke provided a much-needed boost and Palace started to get their act together when drawing 1-1 against Bournemouth, with the London side then landing victories against Middlesbrough and Stoke.

Another three points were collected at Sunderland after trailing 2-0 and the Eagles came from behind again to draw 1-1 at Goodison Park.

We’re always happier to back teams who have the sort of character to get back into the game and this has happened regularly with Crystal Palace recently.

The 4-1 win against Stoke was the last time they’ve played at home, with Andros Townsend completely pulling the strings in that clash and Palace now have a striker in Benteke that could also prove to be the difference between these sides on Saturday evening.

After all, West Ham look a bit of a shambles this term and they’re currently in the relegation zone with four points from seven games played.

Slaven Bilic is under pressure to get things right, with the prospect of relegation an unthinkable one for Messrs Gold and Sullivan who engineered a move away from the Boleyn Ground to the London Stadium.

However, the bottom line is that the Hammers have lost all three of their games on the road this term. Losing at Chelsea and Manchester City was obviously no disgrace although a 4-2 reverse at The Hawthorns was eye-catching.

More recently, a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough saw Dimitri Payet strut his stuff in usual fashion although the Frenchman can’t be expected to do it all on his own, even if Michail Antonio has chipped in with five goals this term.

The decision to let James Tomkins leave for Palace last summer is looking increasingly questionable and the centre-half might well show Bilic the sort of defensive stoutness that is missing this term.
