One team has won their past four matches, the other has managed to score just one Championship goal all season. Therefore, it’s strange to be able to back Newcastle United at such big odds for Saturday evening’s clash.

Rafael Benitez has assembled a gargantuan squad at St James’ Park, with Daryl Murphy, Mohamed Diame, Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu just some of the players who have arrived at the club this summer.

After a slow start where Newcastle suffered defeats against Fulham and Huddersfield (both teams who have started the season well), United have pulled their socks off and reeled off four straight wins.

The most recent victory was a 2-0 triumph against a quality Brighton side and Benitez will have Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic back in the squad for the trip to the Midlands, with the manager having too many players for the team coach!

Derby are clearly a work in progress under Nigel Pearson who has been unable to wave a magic wand straight away despite his heroics with Leicester City. The recently 1-0 defeat at Burton was strange in that his team seemed to lack the fight served up by the Brewers.

Pearson has changed personnel to land the signatures of Ikechi Anya and Matej Vydra, with Chris Martin moving to Fulham on loan and it’s clear that the latter wasn’t rated by the manager.

On paper, the Rams have a good side, although confidence levels are low and Newcastle are perhaps not ideal opponents despite the manager having had a fortnight to work with the majority of the squad.

It’s hard to cultivate a winning mentality over night and it’s also hard to remember a time when a Championship club managed to spend so much money and draft in a host of quality players which means fierce competition for places.
