Most bookmakers are just favouring Keith Dalgleish’s What’s The Story for the Lincoln consolation race and that’s understandable as he was impressive when winning over 7f here last November, and warmed up for this with a third on the all-weather last month. With Ryan Moore booked, you sense this race has been on his agenda for a good while and he has a fitness edge over John Gosden’s Taqdeer, who was a promising three-year-old seen winning at Newmarket when last in action in 2016.

However, the Dalgleish runner has his stamina to prove for this trip and while he promises to stay, I’m not prepared to take the chance given his stingy odds. There are dangers wherever you look besides and one horse we know stays a mile in soft ground is Kynren, a seriously progressive sort for David Barron last year, who signed off with a victory in the Straight-Mile final at Redcar. He has to be considered along with Original Choice, whose short-head second at Haydock (1m, heavy) when last seen suggests he’ll be at home in the conditions.

However, I’m going even further down the betting list for the selection in LORD OF THE ROCK, with plenty of 20/1 up grabs on Jedd O’Keeffe’s six-year-old. He was that price when winning the 2016 renewal of this race on his reappearance and that wasn’t the only time he’s gone well fresh as his York win last summer came on the back of an absence of nearly four months. Formerly with Michael Dods, his owners decided to switch stables in order to give him a change of scenery and another crack at this race has long been the plan according to his new trainer, who picked him out for a special mention in a recent Weekender interview and expressed a wish for some give in the ground.

He’s certainly got that here and while there are more progressive types up against him, I reckon he’ll be thereabouts at the finish and have had a little each-way on him with Paddy Power, who are paying out on five places. He’s also in an each-way double with Donncha, my main fancy for the Lincoln, in the hope they can both get placed to return a nice profit.
