The closing 5f handicap looks wide open and the fact bookmakers are going 5/1 the field tells you finding the winner won’t be easy, but VENTUROUS looks to have a better chance than his 2017 form figures (0706) would suggest.

The David Barron-trained four-year-old hasn’t won since his juvenile days when under the care of Charlie Appleby, which is a surprise as he was a classy sort who won twice and was considered good enough to run in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes (sixth behind Shalaa).

The closest he got in five runs last season was a third at Newmarket on his reappearance and he paid the ‘ultimate price’ when beaten as favourite on his final outing at Goodwood as he was given a gelding operation, before joining his current stable for the start of this campaign.

After showing very little on his first three outings, he showed that the old ability was still there when showing good speed on just his second start over today’s trip at Doncaster last time. He couldn’t maintain his effort and finished sixth (of 13), but he should prove sharper for that run given he’d been off for nearly three months previously.

Dropped a further 3lb by the handicapper since, he can line up off what is a career-low handicap mark of 82, which is 15lb lower than his highest rating, and this is his first venture into class 4 company.

If a clincher for the bet is required, it’s provided by the booking of Silvestre De Sousa and the champion jockey-elect should be a able to get a nice position early from stall four.
