Anything from here is a bonus for an England side who have punched above their weight to reach the World Cup semi-final stage, although Roy Hodgson must be having a wry smile at the way things have worked out.

While the Three Lions were handed Uruguay and Italy in their 2014 World Cup group, England have simply had to beat Tunisia and Panama to reach the last sixteen before a penalty shootout win over Colombia.

Gareth Southgate’s team were then toiling against Sweden before yet another goal from a corner, although they went from strength to strength following that opener and put the game to bed against opponents seemingly unable to chase the game.

Which brings us on to Wednesday’s clash against Croatia. A match which conjures up memories of that 3-2 reverse at Wembley which put paid to England’s hopes of reaching Euro 2008.

The Blazers are a decent enough team although that 3-0 win over Argentina seems to owe more to the weakness of the opposition than their particular strength, while they have a great reliance on a certain Luka Modric.

They are also pretty weary after two 120-minute matches against Denmark and then Russia, with Croatia trailing in both games and eventually going through on penalties.

The Blazers looked like the walking wounded towards their clash against the tournament hosts and it will be a patched-up group of players that take to the field for this encounter.

England will be aware of the tired legs within the Croatian ranks and there are players like Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard ready to exploit it. There is also John Stones and Harry Maguire causing havoc when England win corners.
