Gareth Southgate stuck to his guns when it came to selecting his first England squad following a highly successful 2018 World Cup campaign.

While many were calling for several youngsters to be included in the set-up, Alex McCarthy is the only uncapped player in the squad and the 28-year-old is unlikely to get much game time considering Jordan Pickford is now first choice.

It made sense for Southgate to reward the players that were so pivotal in helping the Three Lions restore some national pride, with Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill the casualties of a forward-thinking strategy.

Raheem Sterling has started the season brightly for Manchester City and can be expected to partner Harry Kane in attack for this encounter, with Southgate likely to persist with a 3-5-2 formation which will see Harry Maguire, John Stones and Kyle Walker in the centre-back positions.

Spain are starting a new regime under Luis Enrique who replaced the departing Julen Lopetegui and there was a feeling of disappointment after a 2018 World Cup exit at the hands of Russia.

Sergio Ramos and Sergio Busquets are the two most experienced players within the ranks, with Alvaro Morata in from the cold and we also see Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso join his team-mate in the squad.

Alonso has been one of the most impressive Premier League performers and might stake a claim in the national team starting with this game at Wembley, although it’s hard to state too strong a case for either side.

It could be defences on top at the national stadium and we’re happy to punt the draw accordingly.
