Everton have reportedly had a “season of struggle” although the Merseyside club’s mid-table position isn’t too bad considering that Roberto Martinez doesn’t have the resources of the big Premier League clubs.

A Europa League campaign clearly had an impact on domestic results, although a recent 3-0 win against Manchester United suggests that the Toffees can land another three points in front of their own supporters when Sunderland come to town.

Everton have won their last six matches at Goodison Park, with Romelu Lukaku one goal short of the magic-20 mark and the Belgian might enjoy himself against a Sunderland defence who have looked shaky on the road all season.

It’s hard to understand why Everton are just short of even money against a side who are odds-on to be relegated. Dick Advocaat will clearly regard a point from this game as a great achievement although two victories on the road suggests that a win is beyond them.

In fairness to the Black Cats, they have drawn more (8) than lost (6) away from home this term and they are capable of sticking to their guns. Sunderland will consider this a good time to be heading to Goodison although a lack of quality from the visitors should see Everton over the line.
