Mariners way too short for play-off clash

Grimsby were the well-backed favourites to land the National League title back in August, although Paul Hurst’s team have not landed a blow on champions Cheltenham all term and ended up winning less than half of their matches.

Indeed, Saturday’s defeat at Tranmere with admittedly a weakened team means that the Mariners play their first leg match at Blundell Park before heading to Essex and it’s a surprise to see them so short for a victory.

Grimsby have only won thirteen of their twenty-three matches on home soil this term, with the last nine National League games seeing Hurst’s men win on just two occasions.

Indeed, on Tuesday 12 April, the two teams clashed in Cleethorpes and Braintree ran out 1-0 winners. Danny Cowley has worked wonders with a modest squad and Town come into the play-offs off the back of four straight wins.

Victories at Grimsby, Wrexham and Gateshead was a tremendous achievement and they can be supported at massive odds in this clash.

There seems to be a weird belief that Grimsby are a lot better than the results and table suggests. But on what basis? They have a formidable striker in Padraig Amond although the limping way that the season finished means we have to side with the visitors here.

Michael Cheek has hit a brace in his previous two matches and let’s not forget that Braintree also beat champions Cheltenham in March.
