The New One makes his seasonal reappearance at Kempton this afternoon in a race he has won for the last two years and, like 12 months ago, he has a penalty kick.

That’s reflected in the betting of course and odds of just 1/5 mean we have to look elsewhere for a bet. Fortunately the handicaps offer up a couple of betting opportunities, with Tim Vaughan’s KOULTAS KING fancied in the 3m handicap chase (due off 3.50pm).

The eight-year-old has the least experienced of the eight runners with just one start over fences, that coming at Stratford in August when he found only Sgt Bull Terry a half length too good. He looked certain to score that day after leading before the last, only to flag on the run-in and just get caught. That was still a promising chase debut and it can be upgraded as it transpired that he had lost a shoe during the race.

He’s since finished second again when switching back to hurdles, but he lost little in that defeat to an in-form rival and has the scope and size to be a much better chaser. Richard Johnson said as much after riding him to a hurdle success at Huntingdon a couple of seasons back, describing him as a “3m chaser in the making”, and this looks an ideal opportunity for him to start living up to that prediction.
