If you’d told a Manchester United fan that they would be ten points clear of Chelsea ahead of this fixture, they might have gotten themselves excited although the grim reality is that the Red Devils are in a slump.

Sitting sixth in the Premier League, they are virtually out of the title running and Louis van Gaal’s future at Old Trafford looks non-existent, although the Dutchman was still in charge on Sunday morning and might take charge for this BT Sport-televised encounter.

The last four matches have all ended in defeat, with Van Gaal at a loss to explain how badly the team are faring. Quite simply, they look there for the taking against a Chelsea side showing green shoots of recovery.

Jose Mourinho’s recent departure seems to have lifted several players and the Blues claimed a facile win over Sunderland before a 2-2 draw against high-flying Watford.

While Diego Costa is suspended for this clash, Loic Remy can come into the attacking positions, while Eden Hazard is no stranger to roving as a false nine.

United were solid defensively up to recently, although they can’t even be depended upon to keep a clean sheet. The team’s confidence looks shot and this could be the first win for Guus Hiddink since replacing Mourinho.
