Last season’s derby clash at Old Trafford was a particularly one-sided affair and there is every reason to think Sunday’s showdown will go the way of Manchester United too.

The only slight reservation with backing the Red Devils is that they will embark on a late flight home from Russia on Wednesday night, although Manchester City are also in action the same evening, so it softens the blow for Louis van Gaal’s team.

Manchester United have been pretty robust on home soil this season. Three games won, one drawn and a Christian Benteke spectacular the only time that the net has bulged for the opposition.

The Red Devils have also beaten FC Bruges and Wolfsburg in the Champions League, while Ipswich were easily beaten in the League Cup. Old Trafford is turning into something of a fortress and it won’t be breached this weekend.

Morgan Schneiderlin is turning into a fan favourite already and he will be partnered by either Schweinsteiger or Carrick in deep midfield, with LVG seemingly preferring Ander Herrera over Memphis Depay as part of an attacking trident behind Wayne Rooney.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are establishing what could be a beautiful partnership at the back in front of arguably the world’s best goalkeeper. Would United fans swap David de Gea with anyone else?

Manchester City will have Vincent Kompany back in central defence and potentially Aleksandar Kolarov in the left-back position although there will be no David Silva or Sergio Aguero in the attacking positions.

Wilfried Bony and Raheem Sterling might be able to bully Bournemouth in a home match but will they cause that many problems for the United defence?

We don’t think so and feel that a more pragmatic and reliable Red Devils side can land the three points in this game and stake a claim for the title this term.

City were badly exposed in a recent 4-1 defeat at White Hart Lane and, although the previous three matches on the road have yielded a victory, the win at Crystal Palace was particularly fortunate.

These derby matches are all about raising the intensity of play and it appears that United are coming to the boil perfectly after executing the perfect game plan when winning 3-0 at Goodison Park.
