Aitor Karanka has steered Boro back into the Premier League and owner Steve Gibson has sanction a series of signings in a bid to remain a top flight entity for more than one season.

Indeed, Middlesbrough look better-equipped than fellow new boys Burnley and Hull City after recruiting a spate of new players including Marten de Roon, Viktor Fisher, Antonio Barragan, Alvaro Negredo and Victor Valdes.

Valdes in particular is an eye-catching acquisition and should be a safe pair of hands between the sticks, while it’s worth noting that Boro were defensively tight last season and conceded just eight home goals in the Championship.

Clean sheets will be the target for Karanka and this opener against Stoke looks like a clash where there will be no quarter given, with the Potters wary of facing one of the promoted sides in the opening game.

Mark Hughes has recruited Joe Allen during the summer, with Saido Berahino potentially arriving next week although the nucleus of the squad has remained the same and the team will be short of quality firepower for this game.

Marko Arnautovic probably presents the biggest goal threat although Stoke will simply want to emerge from this game without a first defeat to their name and a point wouldn’t be a bad outcome for either side.
