Last year’s winner Harry Angel hasn’t recovered from his recent injury but Godolphin still have a strong team, headed by King’s Stand winner Blue Point. Given a copybook ride by William Buick, who tracked the trailblazing Battaash and got a lovely lead, he was comfortably ahead at the line and that represents top sprinting form. However, I’m not sure he’s going to be quite so effective away from Ascot – where he has form figures of 1311 – and over this extra furlong against fellow top-notchers (he’s 0-4 over this trip at Group 1 level). At current best odds of 7/2, I have to take him on.

Godolphin’s second-string Dreamfield has to be considered at a bigger price as while he is taking a massive jump up in class, having finished second in the Wokingham last time, his trainer John Gosden clearly thinks he’s up to the task and this track, on which prominent racers like him have a decent record, should be more to his liking.

He is preferred to Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar, who didn’t appear to be in love with genuinely quick ground at the royal meeting, hanging away to his left when getting to the front and just holding on from the re-opposing Sands Of Mali. Besides, that looked a sub-standard renewal, with just one previous Group 1 winner amongst the 22-runner field, and I’m not sure the current crop of three-year-olds are up to much.

So I’m going to take a chance that the six-year-old LIMATO can rediscover his best form form now dropping back to 6f following a couple of well beaten efforts over a mile. He’s clearly no miler, and it seems his connections have finally accepted that, but he wouldn’t be far off the best sprinters of the past decade on his best form over 6f and it shouldn’t be forgotten he finished second in the Nunthorpe over 5f not so long ago. A wildly impressive winner of this race in 2016, he only found Harry Angel too good last year and could just be primed for another huge effort, especially with Harry Bentley, who knows him best, back on board. At 11/1 with Unibet (10/1 is freely available elsewhere), he’s a cracking price too.
