There doesn’t appear to be a great deal of market confidence behind either of Aidan O’Brien’s fancied pair of Happily and I Can Fly, although that could change on the day and the latter filly can be expected to come on a bundle for her reappearance third at Leopardstown. Happily, on the other hand, lacks a run this season and backing a stable representative first time out in this Classic is risky business, with three of his four winners having run in that Leopardstown trial previously.

But this might go to a British stable for the first time since Sky Lantern in 2013 and that horse’s trainer Richard Hannon could have the answer in Free Handicap winner ANNA NERIUM. That Newmarket race looked a particularly strong renewal this time round and a better trial, in my mind at least, than the Nell Gwyn won by Soliloquy. The latter got first run on her rivals at the Craven meeting and I wouldn’t be surprised if the second Altyn Orda turned the tables here, although the third Eirene hardly franked the form the other day.

Back to the Free Handicap and while Anna Nerium surprised Hannon by winning as she did by three lengths, there was no fluke about her three lengths victory and I loved the way she really grabbed the ground when switched to win with a ton in hand. On that evidence she’s going to be suited by the extra furlong of the Classic and the daughter of Dubawi looks ready to strut her stuff, whereas a fair few of these might need a few more weeks (and some sunshine) to reach their peak. Reported to be delighting her trainer at home, she looks big each-way value at the current 16/1.

Charlie Appleby’s Wild Illusion is worthy of a mention given her single-digit price, but she lacks a run and looked well suited to soft ground when landing a Chantilly Group 1 last October. If the forecast is right, I can see the ground drying out to ‘good’ or even faster, which would also seriously compromise the chance of Fillies’ Mile winner Laurens, who is going to need 1m2f plus before too long and could find things happening a bit quick for her.
