John Gosden landed Tuesday’s feature with Nathra and his FOUNDATION is hard to oppose in the this afternoon’s feature, the Craven Stakes over a mile (due off 4.30), albeit at odds-on.

There were few more unlucky losers in Group 1s last season than the son of Zoffany, who couldn’t get a run for love nor money for most of the last couple of furlongs in the Racing Post Trophy, in which he finished full of running into third. He’d rattled off a hat-trick previously, culminating in a Group 2 over course and distance, and he can get his career back on track with victory here to book his place in the 2000 Guineas.

Sadly, we’re not going to get rich backing him at just 4/6, but the 8/1 on recent Doncaster winner MOBSTA is more like it in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes (3.55pm) run over 6f earlier on the card. A smart juvenile in the 2014 season, he didn’t reappear until last September and it then took three runs over the wrong trip (5f,7f twice) for connections to realise they had a proper 6f horse on their hands. He proved that conclusively when winning a shade cosily over track and trip last October and he might have finished placed in a Listed contest at Doncaster on his final start but for meeting with trouble in running.

That form leaves him with something to find here, but he looked to have improved for his winter break when landing the Listed Cammidge Trophy (6f, soft) on his reappearance and still lightly-raced after just eight career starts, there may well be better to come. Today’s tacky ground certainly won’t bother him – unlike the forecast favourite Magical Memory who wants it faster – and his race fitness is another asset against several rivals who are having their first run back and may need it.
