Preston North End have been mightily impressive for much of the season, recording a massive 89 points from 46 games played. However, a slip-up against Colchester on the final day of the regular season saw MK Dons secure the second automatic promotion berth and leaving the Lancashire side contemplating the play-offs.

It’s hard to take for Simon Grayson’s side who finished a full twenty points clear of Chesterfield in the final standings, although North End now need to go out and demonstrate they can outclass the other teams in the play-offs to secure Championship football.

The bottom line is that Preston hadn’t lost in the league since January before Colchester won 1-0 on Sunday, with twelve wins being recorded on the road this season and that included a 2-0 victory at Chesterfield.

A similar result could be on the cards here, with the Spireites having Eoin Doyle to thank for their early season form and the striker has since departed for Cardiff on loan.

The Derbyshire side have little to lose from having a crack at Preston in this game and did recently secure a 6-0 win against Colchester, although Paul Cook’s side might come up short against a side who can boast Joe Garner and Jermaine Beckford in attack.

Preston won’t be messing about and waiting for the Deepdale second leg match to get the job done. Grayson will ensure that the fire in their bellies can get them victorious on Thursday and then ready to finish off the job.
