Willie Mullins is running four in Wednesday’s feature, the Coral Punchestown Gold Cup (5:30), as he continues his battle with Gordon Elliott for the Irish Trainers’ Championship, and they’ve all got something to recommend them. Bellshill is the shortest of the quartet in the betting (around 5/1 currently) and he’s coming off an excellent fifth in the Irish Grand National, whereas his stablemates Total Recall (fell and since pulled up in the Grand National), Killultagh Vic (pulled up) and Djakadam (fifth) hardly covered themselves in glory in last month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.

That race could still provide today’s winner, though, as the game fourth ROAD TO RESPECT is the youngest runner in the field at seven and has the scope to do even better. A winner over a Grade 3 over course and distance back in October, he stepped up on that when landing Leopardstown’s Christmas Chase, the form of which was franked by the runner-up Balko Des Flos in beating Un De Sceaux in the Ryanair Chase. While he was beaten over 12 lengths by Native River at Cheltenham, he was much closer than that before fading up the hill and is going to appreciate dropping back to 3m on a better surface here. This doesn’t look the strongest renewals and he rates a solid favourite to give trainer Noel Meade his first winner in the race.

With question marks over several of those near the head of the market, there is the potential for a relative outsider to nick a place and reward each-way backers. That horse could well be Mouse Morris’ ALPHA DES OBEAUX as he avoided a hard race when falling at the 15th (Chair) in the Grand National just 11 days ago and is presumably none the worse for that experience. While he has a few pounds to find with the best of these on official ratings, he’s a relatively fresh horse and should be capable of running right up to his best here given he had been primed for Aintree. The 33/1 on offer at bet365, who are one quarter the odds instead of the standard fifth, seems fair value. UPDATE – Alpha Des Obeaux has been declared a non-runner.
