Spain are favourites on the 2018 World Cup outright market, with many feeling as though they have the elements to win this competition for a second time in eight years.

However, they were rocked by Julen Lopetegui being dismissed two days before their first match against Portugal and it appears as though this has affected the players, with Fernando Hierro struggling to make the same impact.

The opening encounter saw a lively 3-3 draw and plenty to like about Spain’s attacking play, although a slender 1-0 win over Iran saw the Asian side have an equaliser chalked off for offside, while Spain trailed twice against Morocco before drawing 2-2.

Defensively there are issues and Sergio Ramos has called for improvement, with individual errors leading to gaps at the back, while Spain have often laboured in attack although it’s admittedly tricky against teams with lots of players behind the ball.

Which is exactly what we’re likely to see on Sunday, with Russia unlikely to make the same sort of sloppy errors which saw them thrashed 3-0 by Uruguay.

The hosts know that they need to stay in the game during the early stages and look to slow things down, with Spain’s quick passing style having the potential to undo them.

Russia have a fair bit about them going forward and a red card scuppered their hopes of getting back against Uruguay, although we shouldn’t forget that the previous two games had seen them score eight goals.
