Next Sunderland Manager Odds

Sunderland thought they had found their manager of the future when they appointed Michael Beale just before Christmas. However, eight weeks and 12 games later, they are searching for a third permanent manager of the season. The Black Cats won four of his games in charge but fans became restless with the team's style of play. He leaves the club in 10th place, four points off a playoff place with 13 games to go in the season.

There were a number of candidates considered in December after Tony Mowbray was sacked, including Nice assistant manager Julien Sable and Reims boss Will Still. The likes of Paul Heckingbottom is another strong candidate who helped Sheffield United get automatically promoted from the Championship last season.

It's clear that promotion to the Premier League. is the target, with football betting sites. having opened a market with plenty of familiar names for the role.

Will Dodds Be Promoted From Within?

Mike Dodds is currently trading as the betting favourite with most betting sites to become the next manager of Sunderland. The 37-year-old is in caretaker charge of the Black Cats and saw the team land a 2-1 win over West Brom on Saturday, with the Wearside outfit riding high in the Championship despite the recent sacking of Tony Mowbray.

This victory ended a winless run of three matches, with the Black Cats having five shots on target compared to the opposition's one. Dodds now has a midweek encounter against Leeds, where he will hope to impress the powers-that-be and demonstrate that he's the man for the job.

Dodds has been on the Sunderland payroll since August 2021 and has held the role of head of individual player development. However, it could be that he is now given the chance to manage the first team on a permanent basis.

Could Heckingbottom Make Swift Return to Management?

Paul Heckingbottom left Sheffield United last week, although it shouldn't be forgotten that he was hugely successful with the Blades in terms of engineering promotion to the Premier League in the first place.

The 46-year-old might jump at the chance to immediately return to management, with Sunderland offering him a chance to use the same blueprint from last season which saw Sheffield United finish second in the Championship behind Burnley to seal automatic promotion to the top flight.

Betting apps think there's a distinct chance that we'll see this manager in the running for the vacant post and he could well be on the shortlist.

Will Sable Make Switch From Nice to Sunderland?

Julien Sable is hardly known by football fans in England, but the Frenchman has leapt to the head of the football betting market to be the Sunderland manager. The 43-year-old is currently the assistant manager of Nice, with the former France under-21 international having cut his coaching teeth with Saint Etienne.

This included being the interim manager on a couple of occasions, with some outlets reporting that the next appointment at the Stadium of Light is likely to come from overseas. Sunderland might want someone who can work with younger players, and they were previously linked with Nice manager Francesco Farioli earlier in the year, although it's his assistant Sable who is now the subject of a gamble.

Hellberg Set for Sunderland Talks

Kim Hellberg could be the right profile of manager for Sunderland, and it appears that the Swede will be holding talks with the Championship club with regard to the vacant role. The 35-year-old is currently in charge at IFK Värnamo and steered the Swedish minnows to a 10th-placed finish in the Allsvenskan during his first season in charge, with the team then able to secure a fifth-placed spot 12 months later.

Previously to his time with IFK Värnamo, there were other successes with clubs such as Kimstad GolF, Kuddy IF and IF Sylvia, although this might still represent a risky appointment considering the lack of coaching experience anywhere else.

Could Eustace Be Heading to Stadium of Light?

It's clear that Sunderland are targeting promotion to the Premier League this season, and perhaps John Eustace will be identified as the manager who can steer the Wearside club to promotion. The 44-year-old is regarded as a highly talented coach who was prospering with Birmingham City until his surprise sacking earlier this season.

Eustace was doing nothing wrong at St Andrews when the owners decided to part company with him to bring in the higher-profile Wayne Rooney, with the former Watford midfielder having previously been assistant manager in the Republic of Ireland set-up after a caretaker stint in charge of Queens Park Rangers.

Having experience of managing in the Championship could see the Wearside club identify Eustace as the number one target to take charge, according to new betting sites.

Schumacher Prominent in Sunderland Betting

Perhaps the Sunderland net will be cast far and wide in an attempt to secure the best candidate and Steven Schumacher might well be in the running. The current manager of Plymouth Argyle steered the Pilgrims to promotion from League One last season, and he continues to perform strongly with the Devon club, with the team currently sitting 16th in the table.

Schumacher might feel as though he's taken Plymouth as far as he can, with Sunderland offering more ambition in terms of reaching the Premier League. It wouldn't be a big surprise if Sunderland request permission to speak with the 39-year-old who has been in charge at Home Park since replacing Ryan Lowe in 2021, although some might regard him as too inexperienced for the role.

Could Jones Be Given the Chance to Manage Black Cats?

Nathan Jones has had a quirky managerial career by virtue of the fact that he has prospered with Luton Town but struggled when managing teams elsewhere. The Welshman laid the foundations for the Hatters being in the Premier League, having steered them through the various divisions to reach the Championship before leaving for Stoke City.

Jones' time with Stoke turned out badly, and he was soon back at Kenilworth Road, with Luton missing out on promotion through the Championship play-offs under this manager. He was then given the chance to manage Southampton last season, but this ill-fated spell saw him last just a few months in charge at St Mary's,

While Jones was let go, Rob Edwards was able to steer Luton to the top flight, although Sunderland might consider Jones to be the sort of candidate who can have the Black Cats challenging for a top-six berth, and he is one of the favourites with most UK betting sites.

Could Muscat Leave Japan for Sunderland?

Kevin Muscat is being linked with a number of managerial vacancies that pop up in the Championship and perhaps the 50-year-old would jump at the chance to take charge at Sunderland. The former Wolves and Rangers defender is regarded as a high-calibre manager who could have the Black Cats playing some exciting football.

Muscat was in charge of Australian A-League outfit Melbourne Victory between 2013-19, with the Aussie then having a short spell with Belgian side Sint-Truiden although he has been in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos since 2021, having won the J1 League in 2022 and the Japanese Super Cup in 2023.
