The 2014 World Cup throws up a massive range of betting opportunities, with the bookies falling over themselves to get a share of the pie.
There is special attention reserved for the England team who are currently preparing for the tournament in Brazil, with every firm offering odds on which player will score the most goals in a Three Lions shirt.
Roy Hodgson’s team might only play three group games or instead go all the way and play seven times in South America, although the Top England Scorer merely relates to which players will score the most goals.
As you might expect, Wayne Rooney is the favourite at 5/2 with Sky Bet, although Daniel Sturridge has had a better season and can be backed at 3/1 at Paddy Power to notch the most goals for his club.
Steven Gerrard is a 12/1 chance and likely to be on penalty duties although it’s another Liverpool player who catches the eye and odds of 20/1 about Raheem Sterling look pretty big considering that the winger has improved immeasurably this term.
Brendan Rodgers has proclaimed Sterling as one of the best young players in Europe and Hodgson is ready to start with the 19-year-old who has plenty of pace and trickery which should help England serve it up to Italy.
Sterling also proved towards the end of the season that he has an eye for goal and 20/1 with William Hill looks a very fair price.
“Raheem is an offensive player, a creative player who works hard,” the Liverpool manager said. “If he is given the opportunity to play how he can play, whether at the point of a diamond or on the sides, then he could be one of the stars of the World Cup for me. Let’s not forget he is a 19-year-old who has been one of the top players in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
“He has already shown that he can play in a league that is not just a British league but a league full of world-class, international players. His best games have been against the best teams – Arsenal, United and Manchester City – so he is more than capable. If he continues to have that confidence and play with no fear he could be a really stand-out player if he is asked to play that way. That is key.”
Raheem Sterling to be top England scorer @ 25/1 with William Hill.
