Tranmere Rovers v Oxford United – Hosts will go through at second attempt

Tranmere can knock Oxford out of the FA Cup at the second attempt.

Tranmere can put their league woes to one side on Tuesday evening when they welcome Oxford United to Prenton Park for an FA Cup second round replay.

Tranmere Rovers’ season to date doesn’t make for good reading. They sit third bottom of the League Two table with only Carlisle United and Hartlepool looking up at them, therefore a win tonight against fellow League Two side Oxford United would be welcome news for the Prenton Park faithful.

Tranmere exited the Capital One Cup at the hands of Nottingham Forest in the first round and were sent crashing out of the Johnstone’s paint Trophy last week, therefore their involvement in this competition represents the only remaining alternative to the drudgery of their league campaign.

Rovers managed to secure a stay in the tournament thanks to a stunning late strike from Jason Koumas, however it remains unclear whether the former Wales international will play a part in this encounter due to an achilles injury.

The green light has been given to the Prenton Park loanees however with Calaum Jahraldo-Martin, Steve Jennings, Janoi Donacien and Shamir Fenelon all expected to feature in the starting line-up this evening.

It is hard to get too excited about the home side considering their form in both the league and cup competitions, however the Rovers have been showing the first signs of slight improvement of late, losing just three of their last eleven matches in all competitions, including a 5-4 penalty defeat to Walsall in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and odds of 17/10 at Bet365 for a home win are worthy of some consideration.

Something that we can expect at Prenton Park tonight is a few goals however. The hosts have managed to get their name on the scoresheet in all but one of their last ten outings and they will be in high spirits following their hard-fought 1-0 win away to Dagenham & Redbridge last weekend, a result which lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Oxford have also been in decent scoring form recently, failing to score in just one match since late September. As such, we’ll be backing Over 2.5 Goals in this match.

The signs of improvement are there for the home side and they will just edge a victory tonight at Prenton Park. Nevertheless they will be made to work hard for a place in the next round and the visitors will likely get onto the scoresheet at some point.
