The 2023 Heisman odds are officially on the board, with college football futures betting underway on a number of elite players entering the new college football season. USC quarterback Caleb Williams is the early favorite after taking the trophy in 2022. North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is next behind Williams, while Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. rounds out the top three.

It’s never too early to start handicapping the 2023 college football Heisman Trophy race. Especially considering the college football odds we’ve seen on recent winners.

We haven’t seen a preseason Heisman favorite actually go on to win it in 15 years, so the value is always a little further down the 2023 Heisman odds board. Williams actually had the shortest preseason odds of any Heisman winner in the past five years, beginning the year No. 3 on the board at +700 odds.

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was in the same ballpark with +900 odds on most betting apps. The sophomore was also available at plus-money or better for almost all of the 2021 season. And several Heisman winners that proceeded him came from way off the radar.

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith was barely even on the betting board entering the 2020 season. He was still available around +5000 in the early weeks before shooting up the board to become the first wideout to win the award since 1991.

Joe Burrow, the 2019 winner and eventual No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, was in a similar position entering the season. The LSU quarterback was listed around +2500 before the year started and ended up winning one of the most lopsided Heisman votes ever while leading the Bayou Bengals to a national title.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was also listed well down the betting board entering the 2018 season and ended up with the Heisman.

That means we should consider all prospects at this time, no matter how strong the top of the board looks. And while quarterbacks have won the Heisman in 11 of the last 13 years, Smith’s recent win reminds us that we should consider all skill positions on offense.

We’ll see if the trend of off-the-radar players taking the honor continues as the Heisman race takes shape during the 2023 college football betting season.

Caleb Williams

2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Predictions 1

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner hit the jackpot in transferring from Oklahoma to USC a year ago. He ultimately posted 4,537 yards and 42 passing touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also added 10 rushing scores and led the Trojans to an 11-3 record. But he returns to campus with unfinished business after the Trojans came up one game short of a College Football Playoff appearance.

Williams is the projected No. 1 overall pick for the 2024 Draft, and he’s a significant favorite with 2023 Heisman odds of +400 to repeat as winner on preseason boards. Those are pretty short for a futures award, but unlike team futures the Heisman involves a bit of politics. Williams has an inherent advantage as the most recent winner. He doesn’t need to prove anything or play his way up the board throughout the season. It will be all eyes on Williams to kickoff the 2023 season, and that’s significant in what amounts to a popularity contest at times.

Drake Maye

2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Predictions 2

Maye is the rare breed of college quarterback able to step in as a freshman and take total control of the offense. He passed for 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns in his first full season with the Tar Heels, leading a top-25 offense that averaged 452.6 yards per game.

The 6-foot-4 signal-caller out of Huntersville, North Carolina was ranked the No. 4 overall quarterback prospect in the class of 2021 and definitely lived up to the billing. Now he’s featured prominently on the Heisman betting board, starting off second behind Williams at +1000 odds. North Carolina hired offensive guru Chip Lindsey over the offseason, which only adds more hype around Maye and this entire offense. It won’t be long before the sophomore-to-be is on everyone’s radar.

Michael Penix Jr.

2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Predictions 3

The former Indiana quarterback found a better fit via the transfer portal, eventually landing in Washington roughly 2,300 miles away from Bloomington. He threw himself into the mix with the Cougars and looked very much the part of elite, Pac-12 quarterback ready to let it fire in a shootout every Saturday.

Penix finished second in the nation with 4,641 passing yards, including 31 touchdowns and four additional rushing scores. He was firmly in the Heisman discussion after leading the Huskies to a 7-0 start and fell off after back-to-back upset losses at Arizona State and at UCLA.

Now he’s prominently featured on the board at No. 3 with +1200 odds and ready for more in what appears to be a loaded Pac-12 conference entering 2023.

Bo Nix

This guy has truly seen it all on the college gridiron, and he enters his final year of eligibility tied for third on the Heisman board alongside Penix and Jordan Travis with +1200 odds.

Nix has been in the national spotlight ever since he first saw action as a freshman at Auburn, dueling it out with the likes of Joe Burrow, Jake Fromm and Mac Jones. That feels like a lifetime ago. The highly-touted freshman never really panned out at Auburn, but then-coach Gus Malzahn didn’t exactly put him in the best spots.

He seemed to hit his stride in 2022 after transferring to Oregon, completing 71.9% of his passes for 3,593 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also ran for 510 yards and 14 more scores on the ground. That 49-3 loss to Georgia in the home opener sort of derailed his Heisman campaign before it started last season, but he’s familiar with the system and should have more confidence than ever going into his fifth full season as a college starter.

Jordan Travis

Travis is yet another dual-threat quarterback kicking things off high atop the 2023 Heisman betting board, one of three players listed third at +1200. And he’s the biggest reason oddsmakers are so high on Florida State entering 2023.

The Seminoles are eighth on the national championship futures board with +2000 odds, ahead of the likes of Texas (+2200), Tennessee (+2200), Penn State (+2500) and Notre Dame (+2500). This will be Travis’ fourth year under center with the Seminoles after transferring from Louisville as a freshman. He’s made great strides every year since and looks poised to put it all together for a serious run at the ACC title and all the individual accolades that could come with.

Our Pick To Win The 2023 Heisman Trophy

Sam Hartman, +1800

2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Predictions 4

As much as we’ve enjoyed seeing non-quarterbacks like Smith get their due with well-deserved hardware, it’s silly to look at different positions if you’re betting preseason 2023 Heisman odds. We don’t think it’s fair that the trophy has essentially become the ‘Most Valuable QB’ award, but that’s how voters treat it. Bettors should, too.

We also know that team success and image matter – these are a bunch of sportswriters that control the vote, and there’s nothing sportswriters love more than a good narrative. With that in mind, we like the odds on former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman.

The former Demon Deacon passed for 3,701 yards and 38 touchdowns last season, but it was almost entirely out of the national spotlight. Now he’s headed to Notre Dame, where the Irish are desperate for a quarterback and the lights stay on 24/7. It’s all there for the taking if he plays to his potential, and we think Hartman is the savvy preseason pick at +1800 odds for the 2023 Heisman.
