When Nigel Pearson was installed as Derby manager, many neutrals expected this to be a Premier League fixture next season although County are playing catch-up in the Championship after a particularly slow start to the campaign.

The Rams have won just one match thus far, with a measly two goals scored and they were kicked in the teeth again on Saturday after Bristol City found an injury-time equaliser.

Pearson will have been encouraged by the way his team played against Ipswich (battered down the door and lost 1-0) and then at Ashton Gate, although his team’s current points total means he can ill-afford to exhaust key players at this stage of the campaign.

Therefore, it could be that Derby are showing more of a changed side than Liverpool who have no European distractions and can therefore treat the competition with the sort of respect which saw them reach the final last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are playing dreamy football and the way that they moved the ball around at Stamford Bridge on Friday had Chelsea looking punch drunk.

Roberto Firmino might return from a calf injury although the Brazilian could easily be rested ahead of Saturday’s clash against Hull City, with Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge vying for that starting berth up top.

Klopp will continued with his fairly settled team and it’s hard to see Derby getting a lot of meaningful possession, with County having previously scraped past Grimsby and Carlisle (on penalties), suggesting they are not equipped for an upset on Tuesday.

Liverpool won 5-0 at Burton in the last round and it would be no surprise to see a similar scoreline in this one.
