Manchester City claimed a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road on Saturday although it was hardly a convincing victory. For large parts of the match, the Premier League title favourites were under the cosh and it was only some excellent finishing from Yaya Toure and Sergoio Aguero that saw them over the line.

Vincent Kompany continues to leave a big hole in the centre of the City defence and that’s not too great considering the visitors will attempt to contain Romelu Lukaku on Wednesday night.

Everton know they need to take a positive attacking approach in this clash ahead of a second leg at the Etihad Stadium. Ideally, they would like to be a goal to the good and that’s certainly possible despite a recent loss of form.

Roberto Martinez has cottoned on to the fact that his team need to defend more stoutly and they shaded Sunday’s clash against Tottenham which saw Everton take the lead before the game ended all square.

A similar side will face City, with Lukaku enjoying himself in front of goal, while Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu are also having excellent seasons.

City won’t be too ambitious in their approach considering there is a second leg to play and perhaps their caginess might invite Everton to ask serious questions of a team who have won only four of their ten Premier League away games this season.

There wasn’t too much between the teams when they clashed early in the season at Goodison Park and that absence of Kompany could be telling when Lukaku is enjoying the current hot streak.
