A more speculative punt is going on Karl Burke’s EXPLOSIVE LADY, who is the only three-year-old runner in the six-furlong Listed contest at Haydock (3.15pm), formerly known as the ‘Cecil Frail’ before the race sponsors Betfred attached their moniker. At first glance she looks up against it taking on older fillies and mares, but horses from her age group have an excellent record, landing five of the last ten runnings and placing more times than runners aged four or older. What’s more, two of the three-year-old winners were priced at 11/1 and 20/1.

None of that would matter if she weren’t up to scratch but, on the evidence of her four runs at two, she’s got plenty of ability. After winning at Nottingham on her debut, she went in to finish third in a Group 3 race at Ascot, won by subsequent Nell Gwyn winner Osaila, and third again in Ripon’s Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy on her next start. But she ran better still when beaten half a length in a valuable sales race at the Curragh in September, which she might have won had she got a clear run inside the final furlong.

She’ll need to step up again to land this, but she ought to have more improvement in her after just four runs, and she gets an allowance for her age, which has clearly been advantageous in the past. Her stable has been amongst the winners of late and Ben Curtis, who has ridden her on three occasions, is back on board. There were no prices up at the time of writing (will add later), but she’s forecast to go off at 12/1 and I’d be more than happy to take that.
