Backing Newcastle to beat anyone would have seemed like a fool’s errand a fortnight ago, although a spirited win over Liverpool followed by a 2-1 triumph at White Hart Lane has seen things turn full circle.

We should still tread carefully with a Magpies team who have been roasted a few times this season, most notably when conceding a combined fourteen goals against Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

However, it does appear that Chancel Mbemba and Fabricio Coloccini have now started to gel as a central defensive pairing, with Jack Colback and Moussa Sissoko also coming through some difficult defeats to show why they have previously stood out for United.

As for Aston Villa, Stan Collymore was particularly scathing of his former club on Sunday as they succumbed to a defeat by Aston Villa, with Remi Garde once again having to pick the players up after that defeat.

The Midlands side did previously draw 1-1 away to Southampton and might create a few chances at St James’ Park, although the momentum is very much with a Newcastle team who played pretty well when beating Liverpool.

Georginio Wijnaldum has demonstrated why the club broke the bank when spending £14.5 million to bring the Dutchman from PSV, with a happy Christmas beckoning for a team who were in disarray until recently.
