A place in Pot 4 meant that Northern Ireland would always be handed a tough Euro 2016 draw although Germany, Poland and Ukraine is particularly difficult.

Michael O’Neill must privately know it’s a tall order for his team to find their way out of Group C, even if they did finish top of a qualifying section that featured Greece, Hungary and Romania.

Indeed, the Northern Irish suffered just one defeat from their ten games played although whether Kyle Lafferty can build on his seven goals against Poland is open to question.

The Norwich forward spent some of last season on loan at Birmingham City but managed just six appearances so it’s incredible to think he would trouble some of Europe’s toughest defences, with the Poles being handed an easy fixture in comparison.

Poland are pretty strong as they demonstrated when coming through a qualifying section including Germany, Scotland and the Republic.

They have several outstanding players and that includes a forward in Robert Lewandowski who scores for fun and should cause multiple problems for a rearguard who conceded eight goals in qualifying.

Indeed, the Poles scored 33 times in qualifying and that was nine more than Germany which gives you an indication of their firepower.

Arkadiusz Milik is a shrewd operator who will sit behind Lewandowski, with Grzegorz Krychowiak likely to dominate the midfield area and Northern Ireland are unlikely to stop their opponents for ninety minutes.
