Steve Clarke might have been busy on transfer deadline day although Reading have to be regarded as too short to win this evening against a robust Ipswich team sitting third in the Championship table.

Pound-for-pound, Mick McCarthy is probably the best manager in this league considering he has propelled Wolves and Sunderland into the Premier League, even if his credentials in the top flight deserve closer scrutiny.

McCarthy steered a modest Ipswich side into the play-offs last term and ten points from five matches is a super return, with Town having won at Preston after somehow conceding two late goals at Griffin Park to draw 2-2 on the opening day of the campaign.

Indeed, Ipswich have scored at least two goals in their first seven matches of the season, with Freddie Sears, David McGoldrick and Brett Pitman bringing plenty of firepower to an attack-minded team although the manager will want to see a bit more defensive stinginess after the international break.

As for Reading, this is a team with potential to also do well this season, with Steve Clarke having snapped up Matej Vydra from Watford in a surprising move which could alleviate the Royals’ lack of firepower.

There have been two goalless draws at the Madejski Stadium thus far, with MK Dons and Leeds having come away with a point and even a recent 3-1 win at Brentford isn’t enough to tempt us away from backing the visitors in this clash.
