There’s another BBC Class of 92 love-in on Friday night where the Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs-powered Salford City host Hartlepool United in the FA Cup.

We’ve been here before. Four weeks ago, the Reds beat Notts County by a deserved 2-0 scoreline, with the Northern Premier League team outplaying opponents plying their trade three divisions higher.

The same applies to Hartlepool United who ground out a 1-0 win over Cheltenham in the previous round and Ronnie Moore’s team are now the bad guys for this Friday evening tussle where the prize is a spot in the third round of the cup.

Salford are clearly a team on the rise and the squad is clearly talented enough to be operating at National League North level or even the National League itself, with the players earning more than their current counterparts.

City have actually reserved their best league form for away from home, with teams making life difficult at Moor Lane where just two wins from nine matches have been recorded.

However, recent form was excellent until Saturday’s reverse at Grantham, with the team embracing the prospect of a cup run which could amazingly see them face Manchester United in the next round of the competition.

Hartlepool sit twentieth in League Two and have lost six of their nine away matches this term, with Ronnie Moore having a fairly modest budget at Victoria Park.

“It’s a fantastic draw for both, in a roundabout way some people might make them favourites,” Moore told BBC Tees.

“The whole nation will be against us, everybody wants Salford to beat us, we need to go there and play the way we can and show respect to them.

“It’s not easy to beat Notts County and we need to make sure we’re not one of the league clubs to go out of the FA Cup.”

They come into this match off the back of defeats against Oxford and Mansfield, with the players having to roll their sleeves up and dig out some kind of result although you would think the occasion and conditions will be a great leveller.
