Another tricky handicap for punters to solve and that none of the 12-runner field are priced at bigger than 20/1 tells you won’t be easy to find the winner. The bookmakers are at least unanimous in making Final Nudge favourite at around the 5/1 mark and that’s understandable as he’s run two cracking races in defeat this season, including when third in the Welsh National last time. He has to be a leading player if in the same form four weeks on as should Sametegal, who has produced three good efforts in competitive handicaps since returning from injury and may be suited by this step up in trip. However, they both have plenty of weight to carry and that’s never ideal on ground as deep as this and with the 3m sure to take some getting.

In which case, I’m more drawn to the chances of BALLYDINE who is getting nearly a stone from the pair and could be thrown in on a mark of 131. The Charlie Longsdon-trained eight-year-old is technically a novice after just a couple of chase starts and he promises to be just as good in this sphere as he was over hurdles. After winning a couple of 2m6f novices, he ran Barters Hill close in a Grade 2 to earn himself an official rating of 145 and wasn’t right when disappointing in a Grade 1 at Aintree three months later.

On his belated return he made a perfectly respectable chase debut, when just failing to overhaul the smart Eamon An Cnoic over an extended 2m4f, and he again looked to be crying out for a proper stamina test when third behind Acting Lass (a good winner since) at Leicester three weeks ago. Longsdon made him his ‘trainer’s pick in a fairly recent Stable Tour, saying he has the potential to be very smart, and mentioned the Grade 1 Towton Novice Chase as his target. He’s clearly had second thoughts about running him in that Wetherby race (run at 2.40pm this afternoon) and why not as he’s running for considerably more prize money here (£56k to the winner) against largely exposed rivals. It could prove to be an inspired move.
