Jamie Spencer looks to have a good book of rides at Yarmouth this evening, starting with the Michael Bell-trained RONALD R in the 7f maiden that kicks off the card.

A 130,000gns yearling and a 2017 Derby entrant, he caught the eye when running on into third on his Newbury debut. Warm beforehand and slow into his stride once the gates opened, he made up stacks of ground late on to finish just over a head behind the winner Aardwolf, who has won again since. With both the runner-up and fifth also winning subsequently, the form looks rock-solid and the selection, who should be all the better for the experience and will appreciate this evening’s extra half furlong, may well be able to follow suit.

This is quite a hot maiden for the track and three of his rivals have also shown ability on the their racecourse debuts, in particular Roger Varian’s Jumira Bridge, a beaten favourite when second in a 6f maiden here. He’s respected and has been backed this morning, but I’ll stick with the Bell runner at the bigger price.
