Liverpool are shadow of the team of last season and will be in extremely low spirits following their 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United last weekend.
Bournemouth sit a mere ten league places below Liverpool and will be looking to cause an upset in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup. In all honesty though, would it be that much of a shock if the Reds go home with nothing from this match?
Liverpool have been in dreadful form and the hosts will be confident that they can add to Brendan Rodgers’ misery by inflicting a defeat upon the Merseyside club when they make the trip south on Wednesday evening.
Bournemouth are riding high in the Championship this season and sit firmly at the top of the league table with 39 points from their opening 21 games. They have been unbeaten in all competitions since the end of September, that 2-0 defeat to Derby County proving to be one of only four defeats that the Cherries have suffered since the start of the campaign.
They defeated Premier League side West Brom in the last round to reach this stage of the competition and it would be no shock at all to witness them beating a Liverpool side who are by all accounts utterly dreadful this season.
The Reds knocked Bournemouth out of the FA Cup thanks to a 2-0 win last season, however on that occasion Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez made a start up front. This time around, Brendan Rodgers will have neither player in his line-up and it is unclear where Liverpool will get their goals from.
Mario Balotelli has indeed made a return to the squad following his injury spell, however he has proven to be inconsistent to say the least and we can’t back him to score at any point with any real confidence.
Indeed, we’re finding it hard to make a case for a Liverpool win on this occasion. Rodgers has dropped keeper Mignolet and replaced him with an unconvincing substitute in the form of Brad Jones. He is putting little trust in Rickie Lambert and we feel that an ‘upset’ is there for the taking on Wednesday.
Bournemouth are a top-class Championship outfit and fall some way short of Liverpool when the Anfield side are at their best. Liverpool are far from their best however and we’ll be backing Bournemouth to knock them out of the Capital One Cup.
