In simple terms, this means that to be able to accept players in Alberta, an online casino will need a special license from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

When Will Online Gambling Be Regulated in Alberta?

The AGLC has announced that online gambling in Alberta will become regulated on July 13th 2026. This news was officially announced in April 2026, at which time operators could start to apply for their licences. In theory, this means that all unregulated activity in the province will cease on or before this date.

However, the AGLC has also stated that it would be open to a maximum extension of three months, allowing operators until October 13th, as long as they can demonstrate a clear pathway to compliance. This would be assessed on a case-by-case basis and wouldn’t be the default for all operators.

Who are The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC)?

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission is the government agency responsible for overseeing licensing of these industries in the province of Alberta.

The AGLC’s mission is to create a safer environment, allowing for more responsible choices in Alberta. In a gambling context, the AGLC works across areas like bingo halls, race tracks and land-based casinos and as of July 2026, they will begin to regulate all online casinos as well. The AGLC will issue licences to online casino operators only if they can meet the strict policies and standards, focused on player protection and social responsibility.

What Can You Expect on July 13th?

The main thing to be aware of is that while offshore sites with licences in jurisdictions like Curacao currently accept Alberta players, they’re likely to stop doing so on July 13th if they don’t receive an Alberta licence. There’s a chance that they may be granted an extension if they’re not licensed in time, but it’s not a guarantee.
