The College Football Coaching Hot Seat shifted to "warm" in some locales this season even before Labor Day.

Angry, angst-ridden, and agitated fan bases never stop the chatter about moving on from their current head coach whenever their favorite team loses to its biggest rival or gets crushed by its top intra-conference foes. Never mind whiff when it comes to college football betting odds.

Multiple big-name schools replaced their head coaches since Ohio State won the national championship in January. Meanwhile, thanks to NIL and the portal, rosters remain in constant churn.

There are several teams whose coaches may find themselves in employment peril if their teams do not get off to successful starts early this season.

In the SEC, Auburn's Hugh Freeze tops our market to begin the season.

Alabama's Kalen DeBoer didn't even make it to Labor Day before finding himself cast upon a crimson-hot coaching griddle. The Tide began the season with tempered expectations, moderate college football futures odds, and high hopes before getting waxed in Tallahassee Saturday. DeBoer's counterpart in Gainesville, Billy Napier, faces his own cauldron in The Swamp. The likelihood is high that one or both schools could be looking for a new full-time head coach before the half-time Dr. Pepper Challenge at the SEC title game in Atlanta on Dec. 7.

Let’s take a look at our weekly odds.

Names To Watch On The CFB Coaching Hot Seat In 2025

Hugh Freeze, Auburn (+500)

Buzz: The Tigers opened with a solid 38-24 win over Big 12 foe Baylor. But it just means (a lot) more once the SEC schedule begins in 2 weeks. Hugh Freeze won't cool off here until he logs some intra-conference victories.

Brent Pry, Virginia Tech (+350)

Buzz: Brent Pry and the Hokies got trucked in Columbia on Sunday in front of a national TV audience. They have 3 more games before the ACC schedule begins. Thus, not much will pry Pry from this spot for a while.

Tony Elliott, Virginia (+550)

Buzz: A regular on in this market last season. Tony Elliott's time in Virginia most likely hinges on just how much the powers that be in Charlottesville care about football success in the ACC.

Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State (+625)

Buzz: Mike Gundy may be a man. But his Pokes are playing like . . . boys. OSU lost 7 straight after a 3-0 start last season. This week, they may wish they died of cholera on the Oregon Trail after facing the Ducks. The mullet isn't what it used to be. Time for a buzzcut in Stillwater.

Jedd Fisch, Washington (+900)

Buzz: Fisch went 6-7 in his first year at Washington. Beating Colorado State in Week 1 was a good first step, but also expected. Still work to be done.

Brent Venables, Oklahoma (+1000)

Buzz: The wheels came off the Sooner Schooner during Year 1 in the SEC. Oklahoma drained its NIL account this offseason and overhauled much its roster. Brent Venables faces a big test this week in Norman against Michigan. His fate may well be determined on Oct. 11 when the Sooners meet the Longhorns in the Red River Shootout.

Lincoln Riley, USC (+1100)

Buzz: There are 18 teams in the newly expanded Big Ten. The Trojans struggled mightily last season. They hung 73 on Missouri State in their opener. Lincoln Riley needs to start working on the Southern Cal alumni basis for some NIL money.

Billy Napier, Florida (+1200)

Buzz: Florida head coach Billy Napier is the fourth Gator coach who’s whiffed in trying to recreate the national championship vibe Urban Meyer built in Gainesville. The Gators showed steady improvement late last season. AD Scott Stricklin declared that the Gators were sticking with their head coach for the duration. Florida needs to take the next step this season.

Kalen DeBoer, Alabama (+1400)

Buzz: Alabama fans have landed in purgatory. As poorly as the Tide played last year and again on Saturday at Tallahassee, the coach isn't going anywhere. Kalen DeBoer's Alabama buyout would cost the school about $70 million. His contract, which began in January 2024, is an 8-year deal with an average annual salary of over $10 million, making him difficult to dismiss despite performance concerns.
