The betting favorites for the 2019 Heisman Trophy are out and there is an air of familiarity among the names at the top of the list for fans of college football betting to consider.

Clemson sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Alabama junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa are first and second, respectively, with Lawrence listed at +200 and Tagovailoa +250, according to 888Sport.

That Lawrence and Tagovailoa are so highly valued comes as no surprise considering both are signal callers for two of college football’s premier programs perennially in contention for the national championship, including last season where the Tigers and Crimson Tide faced off for the title for the third time in four years.

Lawrence entered the 2018 season as the No. 1 recruit out of high school and his stellar performance on the field did nothing to squelch the hype. He passed for 3,280 yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions, leading the Tigers to a 15-0 record and the national championship.

And Lawrence was at his best in Clemson’s biggest games, combining to throw for 674 yards and six touchdowns in playoff wins over Notre Dame and Alabama.

Tagovailoa led the majority of Heisman straw polls throughout the 2018 season before injuries slowed him at the end of the year, opening the door for Kyler Murray to win the award. Tagovailoa accounted for 3,966 passing yards and 43 touchdowns last season, the dominant force for an Alabama offense ranked in the top 10 in several major statistical categories.

Other Intriguing Options

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, who transferred from Georgia in the offseason, is third at +900 on 888Sport’s list, with Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, who transferred to from Alabama, fourth at +1200.

Hurts offers an intriguing option. The graduate-transfer moves to an Oklahoma program that has produced the past two Heisman winners, Baker Mayfield in 2017 and Murray last season.

In the Sooners’ prolific offense, Hurts will have a great opportunity to put up numbers like his predecessors and make his own Heisman candidacy. And he has shown he can play at an elite level and has plenty of experience, having won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year award in 2016 and amassed a 26-2 record as starting quarterback at Alabama.

Another quarterback worthy of a flyer is Justin Herbert, the presumptive No. 1 pick in the NFL draft had he declared. Instead, he returns to Oregon where he’ll play behind a veteran offensive line and five of his six top receivers all return. Herbert is +2500 on 888Sport.

Outside of quarterbacks, who have won 10 of the past 12 Heisman Trophies, running backs Travis Etienne (Clemson), D'Andre Swift (Georgia) and Jonathon Taylor (Wisconsin) deserve consideration. Etienne and Swift are each +1400, with Taylor listed at +1600.

And as often the case, the eventual Heisman winner may in fact be someone few are talking about prior to the season. Last year, Stanford running back Bryce Love was the presumptive favorite, with Murray well under the radar with many wondering whether he could adequately replace Mayfield.

But Love battled with injuries throughout the season, and failed to surpass 1,000 rushing yards, while Murray quickly demonstrated he was capable of filling Mayfield’s shoes.
