The 13th college football firing of the 2025 season took place on The Plains over the weekend. The Auburn Tigers moved on from Hugh Freeze after the former Ole Miss and Liberty head coach went 15-19 in less than three seasons at the school.

Freeze joins other SEC head coaches in getting the boot midseason: Brian Kelly (LSU), Billy Napier (Florida) and Sam Pittman (Arkansas). Our college football betting insight leads Bookies.com to compile hypothetical odds on next Auburn head coach odds, with two American Conference coaches atop our list.

Out of the gate, we’re going with the current head coach of the Tulane Green Wave as the next man up at Auburn. Jon Sumrall is a hot name on the coaching carousel after leading the Louisiana university to a 15-7 mark (a .682 winning percentage) in less than two seasons with the program.

Before that, Sumrall led Troy to 23 wins in 27 games coached, going 12-2 and 11-2 in his two seasons with the Trojans and setting the table for his current coaching ascent up the CFB ladder.

We’re giving Sumrall the initial edge in our Auburn next coach odds at +300, a slight edge over fellow American Conference coach Alex Golesh (of South Florida, who we have at +375.

Other candidates have fairly long odds on our board, including current Auburn defensive coordinator and interim head coach DJ Durkin (+900), the former head coach at Maryland. Bob Chesney of James Madison is the other leading candidate at Auburn, with +950 odds of replacing Freeze in 2026.

Bettors using the Caesars Sportsbook promo code can get +220 odds on USF to win the American Conference and a +260 line on Memphis, both trailing North Texas (+200) in a tightly packed race. James Madison is a solid -250 favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference in 2025.

What to Know About Auburn Job

According to the team at CBSSports.com, Auburn is set to pay Freeze $15.4 million to go away, similar in nature to the deal that his predecessor, Bryan Harsin, got when Auburn fired him in 2022.

Auburn has reached the summit of college football, winning a BCS title in 2010, but the program has been mired in mediocrity of late. The Tigers have at least four losses in each season since 2014 and, under Freeze, they were 6-7 in 2023, 5-7 last season and 4-5 in 2025 (including a 1-5 record in the SEC).

There aren’t many openings in the sport’s premier conference, however, which is why Auburn figures to be an enticing job opening (along with Arkansas, Florida and LSU) this go-round.

Some of the longshots on our board include Syracuse head coach Fran Brown (+1200 odds), Georgia Tech’s Brent Key (+1500), Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham (+1800) and former coaches Jon Gruden (+2000) and James Franklin (+2500).

We also account for a remote chance that another SEC coach, Missouri’s Eliah Drinkwitz, moves across the conference to take over for Freeze. The sixth-year Mizzou leader (+2000 odds) is being bandied around as a potential candidate at several high-level jobs this cycle.
