Tua Tagovailoa is the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy coming off a bye week.

The Alabama junior quarterback set two school records last week in a blowout win over Ole Miss. Now he’s tops on the 2019 Heisman Trophy futures list for college football betting with +125 odds at 888sport, well ahead of LSU quarterback Joe Burrow (+300), Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts (+450) and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor (+600).

Tagovailoa was a consensus preseason favorite alongside Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has since plummeted out of the discussion. But this is the first time Tagovailoa has been the betting favorite by such a significant margin.

FanDuel lists Tagovailoa at +140 with Hurts his nearest competitor at +430. You can compare the latest Heisman odds here.

The movement is even more significant considering Tagovailoa didn’t play last week. He was +200 entering Week 6 after completing 26 of 36 passes for 418 yards with seven total touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s 59-31 win over the Rebels. He surpassed former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s school record of 80 touchdowns with 86 while setting another record for single-game touchdown passes with six.

Alabama also moved up to No. 1 in the polls last week following Clemson’s near-loss to UNC. That’s where the Tide remain entering Saturday’s game at No. 24-ranked Texas A&M.

None of the other contenders had a chance to make much of an impression given their opponents. Burrow carved up a weak Utah State secondary, Hurts struggled out of the gates at 2-4 Kansas and Taylor had another strong showing against Kent State.

Tagovailoa’s Heisman Odds Will Soon Be Put To Test

It’s hard to make an argument against Tagovailoa based on his numbers this season and past accomplishments. He’s completing 76.4% of his passes with 1,718 yards, 25 total touchdowns and no interceptions. His career passing touchdown-interception ratio is 77-8 midway through his second season as a full-time starter.

It’s also fair to point out that Tagovailoa hasn’t played a ranked opponent yet. The Aggies should put up more of a fight than previous contenders with a secondary that’s given up just five passing touchdowns in five games. Texas A&M is holding opponents to 191.4 passing yards per game and is tougher than a 3-2 record suggests, with losses against No. 2-ranked Clemson and No. 12 Auburn.

Tagovailoa should continue to pad his stats in the following weeks against woeful Tennessee and Arkansas, with a Nov. 9 home date against No. 5 LSU looming ahead of the Iron Bowl Nov. 30 at Auburn. We’ll see how he responds in the marquee showdowns. For now, he’s firmly in control of the Heisman Trophy betting race.
