A comparison between all 30 MLB team ages and payrolls reflects a correlation between those two data points this season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers began the 2025 season with the oldest roster in the majors and the highest team payroll at $321,043,853.
The Miami Marlins, conversely, have the youngest roster in MLB and carry the smallest payroll at $47,130,000. That equates to just 14.6% of what the Dodgers are spending on players.

Of the top 10 oldest teams in the majors, 8 rank in the top 10 in team payroll. The two outliers—the Red Sox and Chicago Cubs—rank 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 2025 payroll.
Of the top 10 youngest teams in the majors, 7 rank in the bottom 10 in payroll. The three outliers—the Tigers, Twins, and Cardinals —rank 17th, 18th, and 19th, respectively, in the 2025 payroll.
MLB’s official Opening Day this year is Thursday, March 27. The Dodgers and Cubs began the season in Japan on March 18.
