Tarik Skubal might win the American League Cy Young Award. That is, if he’s still in the American League by the season’s end.

The Detroit Tigers’ ace is reportedly tradeable as the team finds itself in fourth place in the AL and 10 games back at the All-Star break, and six games out of a Wild Card spot. Those aren’t insurmountable odds, but Detroit knows it can sell high and spark a revamp of the franchise by moving their star pitcher before the July 30 trade deadline.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has dug into the current MLB landscape and revealed his MLB odds for where Skubal finishes out the season.

Top Teams Eyeing Tarik Skubal

Skubal was drafted in 2018 by the Tigers and made his MLB debut two seasons later. He’s steadily improved each and every season. As of July 23, Skubal was 11-3 with a 2.34 ERA, the major league leader in win percentage (no bad for a team hovering around .500) and ERA. He had 126 strikeouts to just 22 walks.

He’s the current favorite to win the AL Cy Young at all online sportsbooks in their MLB futures odds. He’s also under club control through 2026.

One MLB insider said the likelihood of Detroit moving Skubal was “low but not impossible.” After all, Skubal could be a cornerstone of a rebuild as the staff ace.

Win-now teams could see Skubal as a massive addition to propel them to postseason success.

The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly quite interested. In fact, Tigers scouts have been seen at the Orioles Triple-A team scouring talent. Baltimore added Corbin Burnes via trade in the off-season, so it’s not afraid to make a splash to contend now, especially in a cash-rich AL East.

They also have MLB’s top-ranked farm system, so they have major prospects to move.

The O’s rank fifth in starter ERA this season. Other contenders may have more of a pressing need.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, for example. Injuries have decimated the Dodgers’ rotation (Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler, among others), and while it still ranks 12th in ERA this season, L.A. has the resources to be as powerful as possible. They have a Top 10 farm system and an excess at other positions at the MLB level, too.

The Milwaukee Brewers are in first place in the NL Central and don’t like to spend as big as other teams, so getting Skubal for three years rather than just one makes sense. Milwaukee’s farm system ranks No. 2 behind Baltimore, so they have the tools to make the move and improve a rotation that’s 16th in ERA.

The San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox each have a need and the resources as they each chase a Wild Card spot. The trade-happy Padres have a higher-ranked MiLB class and a lower-performing rotation, giving them the edge to make a move.

The Houston Astros are expected to be players to add a quality starter, but have fewer trade chips available compared to the above.

The Field is led by other teams with a need, but perhaps not the resources to make an offer the Tigers couldn’t refuse, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants
