Klay Thompson was an anchor on four NBA championship teams with the Golden State Warriors. However, the 2023-24 season may have been the last hurrah between the five-time All-Star and the only team he’s played.

The Warriors’ season went up in flames in the NBA Play-In Tournament – Thompson went scoreless on 0-for-10 shooting. Now, Golden State may be prepared to break up the Splash Brothers.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has now updated his projected NBA odds as to where Klay calls home for the 2024-25 season.

Could Klay Thompson Possibly Become A Free Agent?

Thompson was an All-Star five years running before injuries wiped out 2.5 years of playing time. Last year was his first full season back and he picked up where he left off. His 21.9 points per game ranked as the second-highest of his career. He attempted and made more 3’s per game than any other season.

This season, the numbers dipped. He averaged a more-modest 17.9 ppg, the lowest output since his second season, and his 38.7% on 3’s was his second-worst. Across the board, his numbers were down, including minutes per game. Oh, and he made $43.2 million for it.

Still, some teams would consider the 6-foot-6 wing to be a massive addition in terms of play and personality, especially for a contender. He won’t make $40M+, but he can still play.

When it comes to signing Thompson, the Warriors still have a leg up on the rest of the league. They’ve managed to keep Steph Curry and Draymond Green, who are both locked up for at least two more seasons. Coaches and teammates said all the right things after the season-ending loss to the Kings. “We desperately need him back,” said coach Steve Kerr. “I can never see myself not with Klay and Draymond,” added Curry.

But no team is in worse shape in terms of the salary cap than the Warriors, who are an estimated $104 million over the projected number. That said, the NBA salary cap is a farce. The Warriors want him back, though not likely in the gunning, starting role he's accustomed to.

Will Klay Thompson Find A New Home?

Thompson scrubbed his social media accounts of Warriors content, and unfollowed the team. Does that mean anything? Probably not.

Thompson exudes West Coast cool, and he’s only played or lived on the coast. The L.A. native could see an opportunity to remain in the region. The Clippers and Lakers are on the hunt for a championship before their aging rosters get too over the hill (if they aren’t already).

But both teams also reside in the bottom five of projected cap space, so signing a free agent could take some maneuvering. The Phoenix Suns, another West Coast-ish contender, is sandwiched between the L.A. teams in salary cap hell. Those three teams lead The Field.

Thompson, 34, is reportedly seeking a three-year contract and is "open to all external options" in free agency.

Thus, there are teams that could break the bank to fill a need and push it to another level. There are a few notable teams with expected money to spend, and some of them could entice Thompson out of his comfy surroundings.

Rumors persist that the Orlando Magic have an interest in adding the veteran Thompson to a squad full of up-and-comers. Those same rumors add that the interest is mutual. Orlando is one of just two playoff teams with cap room to spend this off-season.

The Philadelphia 76ers are the other, with a sense of urgency that is higher. The Sixers crave a championship while NBA MVP Joel Embiid is still in town. They have roughly $55 million in projected cap space for the next off-season and a lot of holes to fill. Tyrese Maxey is entrenched at point guard and a budding superstar himself. If Thompson is going to leave the Pacific time zone, the Sixers will keep Thompson as a title contender.

If the salary cap were real, the Magic and Sixers would have the best shot at landing Klay.

The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder remain strong options. They have enough cap space to fill the need for a sharpshooter on the outside without gutting the roster elsewhere. Thompson can be that guy and the veteran with rings who can guide a younger squad.

The Spurs are likely more than one player away from being a contender. OKC is ready to compete now.

The Houston Rockets also have cash to spend, but Thompson may not fit the mold there. The appeal of playing in the Big Apple gives a leg up to the New York Knicks, though we’re not sure Thompson can play defense the way Tom Thibodeau requires.

The Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets can compete from a financial standpoint, but not as much from a competitive one.
