Uber-prospect Victor Wembanyama now knows where he’ll play after the San Antonio Spurs were awarded the top pick in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery.

It’s the third time the Spurs have earned the top pick—the other two instances worked out pretty well with the franchise selecting David Robinson in 1990 and Tim Duncan in 1997—and they’ll certainly use that selection on the French teenager who has taken the basketball world by storm over the last 12 months.

The 7-foot-3 Wembanyama is averaging 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.0 blocks in 34 games for the Metropolitans 92 of the LNB-Pro A French League (the top league in the country).

He’s shooting 56% from two, has made 47 3-pointers, and is shooting an excellent 82.7% from the stripe as of this writing. He’s the best NBA prospect since LeBron James, and perhaps the most hyped prospect in the history of sport. That’s not hyperbole. When it comes to Wembanyama odds, online sportsbooks have already begun taking bets.

He'll be the first player taken in June’s draft—he has laughable -20000 NBA betting odds at most online sportsbooks. Let's take a look at some other Wembanyama NBA futures odds.

Wembanyama's ROY Odds Won't Last

While the Spurs won’t bring any bettors title-winning odds and boatloads of cash, there is an opportunity with Wemby’s Rookie of the Year odds. DraftKings was the first operator to post them, and he sits as a heavy favorite at -300. For what it’s worth, G-League point guard Scoot Henderson is at +300 and Alabama wing Brandon Miller is at +1200.

With all due respect to those two competitors, this is Wemby’s race to lose. Not only is he the top prospect in the class, but the hype around him is otherworldly. This is just as much an award about on-court performance as it is the storylines and media presence that a player has around him.

With Wemby, it’s going to be off the charts. He’s going to be a viral sensation like he has been already this year, he’s a media darling and well-spoken, and he’s also really good at basketball.

Even if the Spurs take it slow with him and rest him on second halves of back-to-backs, he’s shown no injury history of note—which is the only way he wouldn’t win this award. Even still, LaMelo Ball (another viral sensation with crazy hype around him) won Rookie of the Year playing in just 51 games. If Wemby hits that mark, he’ll run away with this award by February.

Wembanyama at No. 1 A LOCK

We’re amazed that online sportsbooks even have odds set up, but if you feel like picking pennies off the train tracks, Wembanyama is currently -10000 at BetMGM (meaning you’d need to wager $10,000 to earn $100 profit). In other words, it’s beyond a lock.

It’s not even his fit in San Antonio (which is great, but he’s also a perfect fit for all 30 NBA teams). It’s that he’s been the top prospect in his class since before even the 2022 NBA Draft, and it would take a colossal upset (and then some) for him to not go first overall.

If you think the unthinkable happens, you can bet him at +10000 to go second overall. Oh, and he’s +25000 to go third overall if you believe the Spurs and Hornets have lost their collective minds. The Blazers are hoping that’s the case. It won’t be.

Who Goes No. 2? Miller Over Henderson

The consensus is that Scoot Henderson is the second best prospect in the class. However, he’s a true point guard (and a damn good one at that) and there may be concerns about how he would mesh in Charlotte alongside LaMelo Ball.

Might the Hornets look at the lanky Brandon Miller with the second pick to complement Ball and act as a replacement for the expiring contract of Gordon Hayward next year? BetMGM has Miller at +100 to go second overall (Henderson is -140), and we believe there’s some value there.
