Paul George and Kawhi Leonard have combined for a lot of wins for the Los Angeles Clippers in the last five seasons. But it hasn't translated to postseason success, and the team spent big on acquiring the two stars in the first place.

The tandem could be over after the latest first-round flameout at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks. Leonard didn't even suit up for the postseason, and George couldn't mesh enough with aging me-first point guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook. George must take all of it into consideration when he decides on a $44.1 million player option for the 2024-25 NBA season.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has updated his hypothetical NBA futures odds as to which team George plays for in 2024-25.

What's Paul George's Future in LA?

When healthy, George has been the player the Clippers thought they were getting when they traded five first-round picks to the Oklahoma City Thunder to get him five seasons ago.

Unfortunately, “when healthy” has become a major sticking point in the value of PG-13. In his first four seasons with L.A., the most games he’d played in a season was 56. He stayed relatively healthy this season, however, playing 74 games.

That said, his numbers dropped, offering pause as to how much is left in the tank. George, who turned 34 in the playoffs, averaged his fewest points per game (22.6) since 2019-20, fewest rebounds (5.2) since 2014-15 and fewest assists (3.5) since 2017-18. That said, his field goal percentage (47.1%) and 3-point percentage (41.7%) were the best of his career.

The Clippers listened to trade offers for George last off-season, which perhaps makes it even more likely PG-13 at least gives free agency a look.

Big-scoring wingmen are a hot commodity in today's NBA, and there aren't enough of them to go around. George likely won't take a pay cut if he declines his massive option.

Where Does PG-13 Play if Not LA?

The Clippers have stated they want to keep George for next season. George himself has stated he wants to remain in L.A. (he is a Southern California native). But they're currently $102 million over the projected salary cap for 2024-25 and have made several offers that are likely less than what he'd command on the open market. Teammate James Harden is now an unrestricted free agent, taking $53.5 million off the cap. They should be all-in on George; the Clippers will be over the cap even if they don't re-sign him, and they don't seem to mind paying fines and facing the other roster limitations from being well over.

Who can afford to add George without making big cuts? The Philadelphia 76ers are going to be atop many free agent odds lists this off-season. They rank No. 2 in projected cap space and are one of just three playoff teams in the top 10 of cap space. The Sixers are beyond all-in with Joel Embiid's contract ending soon and Tyrese Maxey playing like a future star at PG. Philly needs a wing, and George is the top one out there (not counting LeBron James, perhaps).

Other Possible Contenders

The New York Knicks have emerged as serious contenders to land George. The Houston Rockets are also interested, but it's likely the asking price will be too high for the up-and-coming team.

Could a return to OKC be in the cards? The Oklahoma City Thunder traded George two seasons into a massive four-year deal, sparking a rebuild that's turned OKC into the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference in 2023-24. Now they're contenders and rank fourth in projected cap space. George said he fell in love with the city and community in his short time there. The Thunder are loaded with talent but without a veteran presence.

The Orlando Magic are also on the upswing, full of young talent and with cap space to spare for now. OKC and Orlando both have contract decisions to make in the coming seasons, giving the Sixers (who are trying to win now, not now and later) a boost over both of them.

The Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls should see George as a great fit to take things to the next level.
